Summon 2.0

Features and Functionality:

Exceptionally relevant results, easy to evaluate and navigate. The Summon service delivers results that meet users’ expectations. A single set of results in a relevancy-ranked list that can be easily navigated and narrowed using multiple methods such as filtering, faceting and sorting.

Spotlighting - Images

Relevant thumbnail images display dynamically in search results from all types of image collections and repositories (commercial, local and open access) to increase exposure and use of this high value content. Image spotlighting makes it easy for researchers to discover image content available in the digital collections and repositories curated by members of the Summon community.

Multiple options are available to help users refine their search results. Faceting options available include content type, subjects, discipline and a precision date sort as well as contextual facets specifically tailored to your results set such as author, genre, region and time period.

Facets/Filters - Institution/Library

Unlike most existing union catalogs, the Summon service enables researchers to easily scope searches using facets to a particular library or group of libraries pre- or post-search for union catalogs indexed in the Summon service. This facilitates convenient access to items available through shared borrowing arrangements. For institutions without a formal union catalog, this functionality enables users to discover content with the flexibility to select combinations of collections tailored to deliver the most relevant search results.

Facets/Filters - Full Text & Scholarship

Filters support time-efficient research for the busy student by allowing results set to be limited to items immediately available in full text online, only "scholarly" publications including peer-reviewed material.

Results Beyond Your Library's Collection

It’s easy for researchers to explore the wealth of content available relevant to their research using the Summon service. With the ability to expand results beyond your library’s collections, researchers can expand their searches to the full breadth and depth of content indexed in the Summon service including institutional repositories and digital collections made available by other libraries, open access repositories, and more.

Citation Counts & Links

For mutual subscribers of citation databases such as Web of Science or Scopus, the Summon service exposes citation counts and citing article links in the Summon service. Inclusion of citation counts in the results display along with pop-ups including links to citing articles within the discovery environment enables users to interact with this valuable information without interrupting the research workflow.

Catalog Details Page/Pop-up

The catalog detail page optimizes the display of items from local and consortia catalogs indexed in the Summon service to help users easily evaluate content within the discovery environment. In order to better serve their users, libraries are also able to customize Summon records for catalog items to include additional enrichment content, custom text and intuitive linking options for placing holds, interlibrary loan requests and accessing e-books. The catalog detail page represents the first step in providing functionality for libraries considering replacing their current OPAC with the Summon service.

RSS Feed

Directly from results users can setup RSS feeds to receive Summon results in the feed reader of their choice. Integrating RSS feeds for Summon searches directly into research guides and course pages helps librarians guide users directly to relevant articles and content.

Save Items & Citation Export

During their research session, users can easily save items from their results. Options to email or print, export citations to bibliographic management software applications such as EndNote, RefWorks and ProCite, or format citations to cut and paste are provided.
