Seattle – June 16, 2011 – Serials Solutions®, a business unit of ProQuest® LLC, today announced an agreement with ARTstor to enable the discovery of its visual materials collections from the Summon™ web-scale discovery service. ARTstor Digital Library provides more than one million images in the areas of art, architecture, humanities and sciences with a set of tools to view, present, and manage images for research and pedagogical purposes.
“We are thrilled about the ability to integrate the metadata from the ARTstor Digital Library into the Summon service index,” said James Shulman, President of ARTstor. “Libraries value their subscriptions to ARTstor and want their students to be able to easily discover and access the collections. We are excited to improve discoverability of visual materials through the Summon™ service and within the context of a library’s entire collection.”
ARTstor Digital Library’s collections, which include contributions from museums, individual photographers, scholars, libraries, artists, artists’ estates and photo archives, are used in the daily teaching and research activities of teachers, scholars, librarians, and students in art history, architecture, literature, world history, humanities, and other related fields of study. With the integration of ARTstor’s data in the Summon™ service index, even more users from all disciplines will soon be able to discover a more comprehensive wealth of visual materials they may not have even known existed within their library’s collections.
“The Summon service provides a clear starting point for research, allowing students to find and access relevant material in the library’s collection simply and easily,” said Michael Gersch, senior vice president and general manager of Serials Solutions. “By including the fast and easy discovery of the full breadth of ARTstor’s visual materials, we are continuing to ensure researchers have access to the most comprehensive search functionality available on the market today.”
Gersch continued, “Imagine you’re working on a paper about the French Empire and Napoleon, and you begin your research from the Summon service. You’ll get a list of relevant books and articles. In addition, if your library has an ARTstor Digital Library subscription, you’ll also get a list of relevant visual materials, perhaps images of Napoleon on his imperial throne or in battle. Clearly, this will give you a much more comprehensive starting point for your work.”
The agreement with ARTstor, signed May 31, 2011, is the latest content announcement from Serials Solutions. Currently, the Summon™ service allows researchers to quickly and easily search content from more than 7,000 providers and contains more than 750 million records. The Summon™ service provides proven value to more than 250 libraries worldwide who subscribe to the service because it provides a clear, comprehensive starting point for research, and helps ensure material in the library is easily discovered and used.
